A great 2nd album from Belgiums finest. I first heard of Balthazar by luck, when browsing various acoustic performances on YouTube. I clicked on a performance by Balthazar, titled 'Amsterdamn Acoustics: Balthazar' and I was quite taken back by the performance. Unlike most acoustic performances you'd expect from Balthazar instead opted to waltz around Amsterdam, belting out their songs. It made for an impressive performance, most notably from the band's lead vocalist, who almost guided the whole band forwards, directing them almost like a conductor as he sang.
Although the word has lost meaning these days, he was literally walking around with such swagger, that it was impressive. In any case, it made me listen to the whole album which was conveniently uploaded to YouTube. The whole album was an impressive affair. The songs that most stood out for me personally would be Hunger at the Door, Blood Like Wine, and my personal favourite, Blues for Rosann. The music itself is brilliant, and used wonderfully to make a variety of different songs.
The vocals are also impressive, though it is hard to miss the fact that English isn't their first language. However, I can't help but feel that this fact adds some sort of flair to the vocals, and in some sense, sort of pushes them forwards more. Great live act. Also from Belgium. Their debut album "Applause" takes it up another level. Kasabian maybe? Balthazar's own distinctive style very strong throughout.
